I’ve finally come up with some ‘how to’ advice on self-hosting!

These first three tutorials are my story of how I was able to make the quantum leap from edublogs to independence! …… They will probably make anyone ‘in the know’ cringe :-)

I suppose the message is – if I can do it, then anyone can!

Thanks to John and David for their advice …. and a great big thank you to Sinclair for his patience in answering all my twitter and email calls for help :-)

Hopefully, I’ll be able to add to tese tutorials as I learn to become more self-sufficient.

  1. It’s a pity about all this edublogs carry on. Your self hosting tutorials look great but just not sure that I have time to sort it all out. Maybe I should just concentrate on Glow with my pupils? But we would miss the worldwide audience and the easy sharing of ideas that come with blogging. Feels like a time for change but will have to think about which way to go!

      Hello Shirley.

I know what you mean about having the time to sort ot all out! I managed to do it in one weekend …… with the help of my twitter network! I suppose the thing to remember is that you can do it in small steps. I was in a rush to find an alternative to edublogs so did tend to cramb it all in (I’ve still got loads more to learn, though!)

How is GLOW coming along in your area? Are you using it with your pupils, yet? It will be a wee while yet before we are able to access it here. I have been given a login password, but it’s a bit lonely in there at my end

Do you think this is a viable option for schools? not sure, but I don’t know if our blog has been swamped with ads yet… perhaps I’m just not observant enough!!

Guess the costs don’t work out too bad over time. Could we not make more use of the Local Authority server, as we have space allocated on that for school websites? That must be pretty empty as folks don’t host that much!

      Hello Rich,

I did see ads on yours at one point, but looks ok now. I suppose that’s the thing, You can never be sure when they’ll strike!

I spoke to someone about the server thing. We have one for the old frontpage websites, but apparently they need updating anyway – so might be talking about a few thousand a year. Then there’s the issue of who would maintain the self-hosting for the whole Authority.

I wondered if some schools might be interested in self-hosting? I think you can have up to 50 wordpress blogs as subdomains?? All for the one annual fee. (+ up to 100 email addresses). Maybe one person might volunteer to be the ‘in-house’ expert …….. you up for it??

Been thinking, too, about the Falkirk website domain name (….sch.falkirk). We own that. Maybe we could transfer it to a self-hosted site and have that then /blogs.schoolname after it, or something?? Need to consult some experts!

Anyway, I’m just glad to have found an alternative to edublogs :-)

I’m very impressed with your new venture!

Are you recommending that schools stay with Edublogs just now?!

      Hi Cassie,

Hope you don’t mind that I’ve been adding Falkirk Blogs to the Carronshore one to keep them ad free :-)

You’ve probably guessed from discussions on here that I’m not happy with Edublogs. I’m not sure if teachers would want to go down the road of self-hosting, but nice that the option is there.

Do you think you’d be willing to give it a go? We could be really brave and move the Carronshore blog over!!
